Given Audi’s decades of success in global motorsport, it’s hard to believe that 2026 marks the famous German marque’s first foray into Formula 1. Having announced plans to become a power unit supplier back in 2022, their hunger to compete quickly grew – resulting in the acquisition of the Sauber team, now the first-ever Audi works squad.
Ex-Ferrari team chief Mattia Binotto heads up the project, also serving as Team Principal following the recent departure of former Red Bull stalwart Jonathan Wheatley. 2025
Present Audi R26 Concept as a preview of the colour scheme and design of the brand’s first Formula 1 car. Revolut announced as team’s title sponsor for 2026 entry.
2024
Expand Formula 1 commitment with 100 percent takeover of Sauber and installation of former Ferrari team boss Mattia Binotto as head of F1 project. Jonathan Wheatley to exit Red Bull to become Team Principal.
2022
Audi – part of the Volkswagen Group – announce they will become an F1 engine supplier when new power unit regulations come into force in 2026. Reach agreement for Sauber team to become Audi works squad for that season.
