There wasn’t a whole lot that was remarkable about Francois Hesnault’s 1985 German Grand Prix, the Renault driver retiring from 20th place on Lap 8 of the race. But before his DNF, Hesnault had made Formula 1 history by broadcasting the first ever live onboard footage seen in a race.
With a bulky camera fitted to the right hand flank of his Renault RE60 at the Nurburgring, Hesnault took F1 viewers inside the cockpit for the very first time during a Grand Prix, marking the birth of the onboard shots that would become such an exciting part of the sport in the following decades.
