WATCH: Mick Schumacher suffers heavy FP3 crash to put qualifying participation in doubt

Mick Schumacher faces an anxious wait to see if he will be able to take part in qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix, after he damaged his car in a final practice crash on Saturday at the Hungaroring.

The Haas rookie lost the car through the corner before slamming into the barriers on the outside of Turn 11 in a heavy sideways impact that looked to have caused a lot of damage to his VF-21 car, especially the left front suspension.

Schumacher was uninjured and climbed out of the car, as the race director immediately threw the red flags to allow the marshals to clear the car out of harm's way.

But with just two hours between the crash and the start of qualifying at the Hungaroring, the Haas crew face a race against time to see if they can repair the car before the session – or they may conclude it is simply too big an ask given the tight time frame, as was the case the last time Schumacher crashed in FP3 at Monaco earlier this season.

After the session Haas revealed the impact had been over 30G, and said Schumacher had been given the all-clear after a check-up at the medical centre. As for the car, they said the chassis was fine, but he will need a gearbox change which means an automatic five place grid penalty for Sunday's race. With an hour to go until Q1, the mechanics were working hard to get the car ready in time.
