One of the most notable features of Mercedes’ 2024 challenger, the W15, is a cockpit position around 10cm further back than on the previous two cars.
As illustrated here, this has been facilitated by a shorter and slightly higher fuel tank, which is situated behind the cockpit. Although this will have increased the centre of gravity height, especially on full tanks – the 2022-23 cars had a lower and longer fuel tank, helping keep the centre of gravity lower – there are other benefits out-weighing that in the all-round set of compromises necessary in the conception of any racing car.
