HIGHLIGHTS: Watch the action from second practice at Suzuka as Mercedes shine in the wet
Mercedes took over at the top of the timing screens during second practice for the Japanese Grand Prix, as George Russell led team mate Lewis Hamilton in a one-two result for the Silver Arrows.
Russell’s best time of 1m 41.935s – marginally quicker than Fernando Alonso’s FP1 benchmark – put him two-tenths clear of Hamilton, with Red Bull driver Max Verstappen six-tenths further back in third.

Sergio Perez backed up Verstappen in the other Red Bull, while Kevin Magnussen rose to P5 late on after some significant set-up adjustment. He was the only Haas driver in action, with Mick Schumacher on the sidelines due to a required chassis change after his FP1 crash.
It was another wet and wild session at Suzuka as rain fell at varying levels of intensity throughout the 90 minutes of running – an extra half an hour added on for planned 2023 Pirelli dry tyre testing that was ultimately called off due to the conditions.
