After Max Verstappen topped the opening practice session, Lewis Hamilton came to the fore in FP2, finishing P1 for Mercedes under the lights at Yas Marina. It was not an evening without incident though, with a heavy crash for soon-to-be-retired Kimi Raikkonen bringing out the red flags.
With most of the field bolting on the red-marked soft tyres just as the sun set midway through the session, the lead changed hands several times with Esteban Ocon surprisingly looking the quickest for Alpine. But Hamilton managed to extract just enough life from his used soft tyres to go top with a 1m 23.691s, beating the field by over three tenths of a second.
Nicholas Latifi had kissed the barriers early on in his Williams, damaging his rear wing while Valtteri Bottas managed to connect with the Turn 14 wall at one point, fortunately only making contact with his right rear. But the biggest moment of the session belonged to Raikkonen, who lost the rear of his Alfa Romeo late on to hit the same wall that Bottas had brushed.
Unfortunately for the veteran, he managed to wipe off both his rear and front wings, but climbed out the car unaided. To watch that and all the other highlights from FP2 for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, click on the video above.
