HIGHLIGHTS: Relive the Qualifying action as Piastri snatches pole position from Norris in Spain
Oscar Piastri came out on top in an exhilarating intra-team battle for pole position for the Spanish Grand Prix, denying Lando Norris as Max Verstappen settled for third place.
After they exchanged fastest laps across the three practice sessions, the fight was on between the McLaren pair, but it was the Australian who made a statement by creating the biggest margin over the second-placed driver this season with his final lap of 1m 11.546s.
Despite an attempt to pick up a tow from Piastri on their first flying laps, Norris ended the Qualifying hour 0.209s adrift of his team mate, while the lead Red Bull was another tenth further back to create an order that mirrors the top three in the championship standings.
The Mercedes duo of George Russell (who set the same time as Verstappen) and Kimi Antonelli were split by Lewis Hamilton, who outqualified Charles Leclerc for only the second time. Rounding out the top 10 were Pierre Gasly, Isack Hadjar and crowd favourite Fernando Alonso, who is still seeking his first points of the year.
Elsewhere, there was heartbreak for Carlos Sainz, who will start from the back half of the grid at his home race for the first time as he qualified in P18, two positions ahead of a struggling Yuki Tsunoda.
