FORMULA 2: Schumacher wins Hungary Sprint Race to secure maiden win

For the first time in 15 years, Hungary had a Schumacher at the top of the podium, as Mick earned his maiden Formula 2 victory in the Sprint Race. The man with the most famous surname in motorsport earned the historic win thanks to a defensive masterclass around the tight turns of the Hungaroring, holding off the experienced Nobuharu Matsushita for the entire 28 laps.

The PREMA racer remained calm as the lights went out, despite going side-by-side with the Carlin at the first turn. Luckily for him, Matsushita ran out of track and was forced to back off. Behind him, Sergio Sette Camara had risen to third and put further pressure on the duo, with less than 2s separating them.

The German was also battling with cooling track temperatures, having seen them drop by six degrees - but, he continued to hold on. Schumacher eventually made it through the chequered flag to the delight of a roaring crowd, despite lapping two tenths slower than his rival in second.

The emotional Ferrari F1 junior hailed it as an "amazing race,” in the aftermath, on a day that few racing fans will forget.
