FIA confirm ‘detailed analysis’ of 2021 Abu Dhabi GP under way

Formula 1’s governing body the FIA have begun their “detailed analysis” into the events of the dramatic title-deciding Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and say “final decisions” on the outcomes will be announced in March.

Max Verstappen clinched his maiden championship with a final lap overtake on title rival Lewis Hamilton, having changed tyres under a late Safety Car, at Yas Marina Circuit.

Hamilton’s Mercedes team launched two protests against the outcomes of the race – the majority of which was led by the seven-time world champion – but both were dismissed, while Mercedes then opted not to pursue an appeal.

The FIA later announced “a detailed analysis and clarification exercise for the future with all relevant parties” would take place.

On Thursday, the FIA said that process – under the leadership of new FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem – had begun. The statement added: “The FIA President launched a consultation with all F1 teams on various issues, including this one.

“On January 19, an item on the agenda of the Sporting Advisory Committee will be dedicated to the use of the Safety Car. The following stage will be a shared discussion with all F1 drivers.

“The outcome of the detailed analysis will be presented to the F1 Commission in February and final decisions will be announced at the World Motor Sport Council in Bahrain on 18 March.

“FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem has asked Secretary General Sport and recently appointed Single-Seater Director Peter Bayer for proposals to review and optimize the organization of the FIA F1 structure for the 2022 season.”
