Max Verstappen survived a late attack from the Ferrari of Carlos Sainz to seal his first Canadian Grand Prix victory, and by doing so, extending his lead at the top of the drivers' championship to 46 points.
After a late Safety Car – caused by Yuki Tsunoda crashing into the barrier at Turn 2 on Lap 49 – Sainz was able to pit, and had the tyre advantage on Verstappen for the remaining 16 laps. But, Verstappen was nearly faultless, holding off the Spaniard to seal his sixth victory of the season. Lewis Hamilton, in the Mercedes, took his second podium of the year in P3, ahead of team mate George Russell in fourth.
Charles Leclerc was able to recover from starting in P19 to finish fifth, ahead of the Alpine’s of Esteban Ocon and Fernando Alonso in sixth and seventh. The Alfa Romeo duo of Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu finished in eighth and ninth, with Lance Stroll rounding out the top 10, in his home race.
